Back from Orlando

I’m back from the GCA conference on church planting.  I had a great time in Orlando but am glad to be back.  All this traveling is beginning to wear on me.  Here are a few updates since my last post that you might find interesting.

  • The website for the church plant in Culpeper is now live.  Go and check it out.
  • I designed the Culpeper website with  While I was designing the site I thought I had shutdown access to it.  I discovered however that I had shutdown rather than  So if you haven’t been able to view Mining Grace for two weeks, now you know why.  Oops.
  • I just received this book and this book in the mail.  Can’t wait to dive into them both.
  • I saw some old friends and met some new ones while in Orlando.  You should check out their work.
    • Tony Giles discipled me while I was in college.  I had no idea that he was going to be at GCA.  Imagine my surprise and elation to catch up with such a dear friend.  He is laboring in Nashville with Ian Sears.
    • I got to catch up with some old friends from church planter assessment this past November.  One of whom is McKay Caston who is planting a church north of Atlanta.  Check out his work on the Dahlonega Church Plant. (facebook group)
    • James Park is another one of my assessment alumni.  We shared a room at GCA.  He is planting a church north of Los Angeles.  Check out his work on GracePoint Mission.
    • One of the great things about going to conferences is meeting new friends.  I got to spend some time with Tim Brister at GCA.  Tim is one of the guys who I know from online social networks: twitter, facebook, and blogging.  Virtual became tangible as we got together over chicken wings to discuss church planting, Puritans, and triathlons.  Check out his blog, church planting work, and church.

Those are all of my updates for now.

Missions Conference Time

We are holding our 53rd annual world mission conference this weekend.  Our speaker is Joseph Wheat, pastor of Highlands Pres in Madison, MS.  As you would imagine, many people give many hours to making sure this weekend’s events run without a hitch.  Missionaries take time out of busy home assignments to travel to the church in order to spend a precious minutes with a congregation.  It leaves many people asking by Monday, “Was it all worth it?”

In my very few years as a pastor I answer the question with strong affirmation.  My reason is simple.  Most of the missionaries I’ve met can trace their call to missions back to some sort of missions conference.  That conference lead them to take a short term trip.  That short term trip let them to a longer term on the field.  That longer term led them to dedicate their lives to serving abroad.  For many would be missionaries, a missions conference is that first step in a long journey of self sacrifice for those who have never heard the gospel.

The goal I set for myself this weekend is simply to look and pray for the people in my congregation and for my sons.  I pray that God would cause them to be captivated by Jesus.  I pray that captivation would lead them to deep personal worship.  I pray that worship would lead them to ask, “Where can I take the gospel where people have not heard it?”  Who knows if God will not use these next 56 hours to begin molding a missionary.

T4G Audio

I thoroughly enjoyed the Together for the Gospel Conference last week. I recommend listening to all the audio from all the sessions. You can find all the audio through Sovereign Grace Ministries.

Not So Live Blogging

Day two of the Together for the Gospel Conference has begun.  I am indeed here.  I’ve profitted immensely from the Band of Bloggers Pre-conference, Ligon Duncan speaking on Systematic Theology, and from Thabiti Anyabwile giving–quite possibly–the best biblical overview of race and ethnicity.

But none of that has found its way into a post.

I’ve decided to begin applying something I heard very early on in my time in Louisville.  At the Band of Bloggers meeting, Abraham Piper made a comment about blogging and faithfulness and ministry.  He said that blogging should always serve your ministry and not detract from it.

I’m going to keep blogging in that servile position.  T4G is exceeding my expectations.  God is here and evident.  By his grace I am being humbled and encouraged in the gospel.  Through his providence I am meeting and visiting with friends new and old.

All that to say, I won’t be live blogging T4G.  Too many better things have occupied my time.  I am taking copious notes and do plan on making comment on individual sessions in the future–just not immediately.

If you want so see someone live blog well, go check out Challies on T4G.

Whether we eat or drink, rise or sit, blog or not–to Christ be the glory.

Louisville Slugging

I’ll be in Louisville next week for the Together for the Gospel Conference. I’m also going to the Band of Bloggers pre-conference. Unless otherwise prohibited, I plan on live blogging both.

T4G and Band of Bloggers

I signed up for the Together For the Gospel Conference yesterday.  I’m also planning on attending the Band of Bloggers gathering in conjunction with the conference.  T4G 2006 produced evident fruit over the past two years as pastors and churches have come together around the gospel of grace.  I’m excited to participate in this years conference.  Reformed Evangelical ecuminity can only be a good thing for the spread of the gospel.

Anybody else planning on attending?

T4G Ads

T4G Ads – I happen to think the Together For the Gospel ads for this year’s conference are absolutely genius, not to mention hilarious.  Justin Taylor has faithfully posted them as they have come out.  Here is the compiled list if you want to look back on them organized by speaker: MohlerMahaney, Duncan, Dever, MacArthur, Sproul, Anyabwile, Piper.
